Avinash Hingorani

Director - Engineer
Avinash started his career as a marine engineer sailing on dry cargo ships, and then worked in shore-based marine engineering, assurance, and operations roles for various marine consulting firms such as Global Maritime and Braemar Engineering, and for offshore vessel owners/operators such as Subsea 7 and Prosafe. He has also worked as a Product Lead for DP systems and sensors at Wartsila.

Working as a marine consultant, his focus was mainly on DP assurance, which included carrying out Failure Mode Effect & Criticality Analysis (FMECA) studies for various DP vessels, producing DP trials documents, and witnessing DP trials on board offshore vessels such as drill-ships, cable-lay, pipe-lay, heavy lift, AHTS, PSVs and Floatels. He was also involved in carrying out FMEAs/risk analysis of Mission Critical Equipment such as Gangways, Cable lay, thruster/propulsion control and drilling control systems.

In his roles with offshore vessel operators, he acted as an in-house DP guru/Technical Authority.  For Prosafe he worked as Principal Engineer - DP & Marine Control Systems, and for Subsea7 he worked as a DP & Electrical Superintendent.

He has been involved in DP operational activity planning, DP incident investigations, and he was responsible to make sure that the vessels complied with client/charterer’s DP specs and applicable Class and regulatory requirements. As part of the asset integrity / fleet management team he was also involved in the development and implementation of performance standards, identifying Safety and Environmental Critical Elements (SECEs), condition-based monitoring systems, remote diagnostic systems, and verification schemes.

Some interesting projects he has been part of involved defining and developing mathematical models for calculating clean operations for all vessels – This project was part of the development of Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans in order to reduce the GHG emissions across the fleet. Another project was about hybridisation (adding of large-scale battery systems to support propulsion) of a diesel electric DP ship, this involved doing NPV and discounted pay back (financial) calculations to justify CAPEX investment and carrying out sensitivity analysis to check the effect of changes in multiple variable costs on the return on investment.

In his roles with vessel operators, he represented their interests regarding DP matters with external organisations such as energy majors (BP, Shell, Equinor, Petrobras, Lundin) and Classification societies.

As an independent marine consultant, he has been involved in marine/DP assurance of new build and existing wind farm support and construction vessels. Over his career he has been involved (witnessed and/or managed) more than 100 DP trials and has authored multiple DP FMEAs.

Avinash holds an MBA from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in Maritime Operations and a Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering. He is also an IMCA accredited company DP authority.
